Not just symptoms

“But this is my sore spot - here”

It’s very tempting to focus on symptoms. I get it. You’ve got a tight and sore low back, you just want some attention on the sore spot so you can get on with your day. And do you know what else? It often works. If you give a sore spot enough attention the pain will often ease - temporarily. It’s what drives people to learn all the stretches and exercises, or get a regular massage. It just doesn’t address the reason for the pain in the first place.

Yes, at a sore spot you can often find things like inflammation, trigger points, muscle spasm, tissue trauma and any number of pain-producing things. But if all you’re doing is focusing on that spot, you’re often missing the reason that area is so upset.

As an example (you’ll want to be standing up for this), drop your chin down to your chest, and allow your shoulders to roll forwards. If you’re standing quite relaxed, you’ll feel your whole body start to tip forwards. If you’re really paying attention, you’ll notice that your low back tightens up. It doesn’t have any choice, though, does it? If it stays relaxed, you’re going to keep falling forwards. See? A great way to increase lower back tension has got nothing to do with your low back.

In the same way that your forward head posture and hunched shoulders are creating tension in your low back, a body is often riddled with problems and compensations that create a complicated web of tension and potential symptoms.

Yes, we want to work with you to get you feeling better, but what you won’t find us doing here is chasing sore spots to achieve it. Instead, we’re going to consistently correct the misalignments your body can’t correct, leaving it more capable of getting on top of the issues it can fix on its own. Not only does that leave you feeling better, but it improves your posture, tension, range of motion, breathing, and a host of other problems you may not have even noticed as they deteriorated.

If you’re suffering from pain that keeps returning, or simply won’t go away, then why not make an appointment to see if a fresh approach can make a difference?
